Drivers scrambled to grab cash after bags of money fell out of an armoured truck on a US freeway.
Videos online showed people rushing to gather up notes that littered the major road in Carlsbad, Southern California – with some laughing and leaping while clutching wads and hurling them into the air.
“This is the most insane thing I’ve ever seen… literally everybody stopped on the freeway to get money off of the freeway,” said bodybuilder Demi Bagby, who posted footage of the chaotic aftermath on her Instagram page.
Several bags broke open, spreading money – mainly $1 and $20 bills – all over Interstate 5 on Friday morning as the truck was heading from San Diego to an office of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp, authorities said.
“One of the doors popped open and bags of cash fell out,” California Highway Patrol (CHP) Sergeant Curtis Martin said.
Two people were arrested at the scene, and Sgt Martin warned that any others found to have taken the money could face criminal charges.
He noted there was plenty of video shot by bystanders at the scene and that the CHP and FBI were investigating.
Anyone who took money was urged to hand it in to CHP in Vista.
Authorities did not immediately say how much money was lost although at least a dozen people had returned cash they collected to the CHP by Friday afternoon, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.
“People are bringing in a lot,” Sgt Martin said. “People got a lot of money.”
The freeway was reopened just under two hours after the incident.
